Barbican
The Barbican Estate is now a classic example of mid-60s architecture, and with so many lovely design touches – and an array of existing beautiful white surfaces – my energy was primarily focused on storage. Alongside some flourishes of colour, the office was given a bespoke bookshelf and desk, with broad shallow shelves taking up a large amount of stuff without making an impression on the room or impacting comfort for whoever is working there.
The bathroom’s original square white tiles and hand basin still felt incredibly modern, but the storage was almost non-existent. This didn’t work at all for my client who was serious about bathroom supplies. These deep shelves took some thinking about with the pipework behind, but my furniture design team did a fantastic job with minimum fuss – including a neat removable caddy. This clean storage concept was carried on into the corridor where a bespoke slimline unit was created to house the client’s collection of 42 pairs of shoes and boots.
"It was a dream project working with Rachel and her team, who brought my ideas to life, elevated them with their skills and know-how, to deliver a perfect execution, modern, yet sensitive to the look and feel of the Grade-listed building they were designing for. The attention to detail was fantastic and as a result I have now enjoyed the finished products (residential custom built-in furniture and storage) for many years, and am sure, many more years to come."
