Green up your home

Interior design - green up your home

After months of building work in any project it's the finishing touches that make a project.

Part of curating the decorative elements that will fit into your new home design can include incorporating houseplants and greenery into your space.

Plenty of articles and studies will tell you the benefits of having plants in your space. From purifying the air and adding oxygen to boosting productivity and improving your health, there are many reasons why we should all have some plants in our homes.

Plus, they look great, too.

Not sure where to start decorating your space with indoor plants? There are 3 distinct areas in every home that work best with greenery. Follow our guide to see how you can easily incorporate houseplants into every room in your house:

1. Corners or Floor Areas: Use large, leafy plants or trees in wide pots

Wondering what to do with an empty stretch of floor? A large, leafy plant or tree can help give more visual interest. These types of plants also sit perfectly in corner spaces, next to a window or beside a piece of furniture, such as a chair.

Palms, Yuccas, Ficas and Fiddle Leaf Figs are some of our favourite choices for these spaces. Just remember to use a wide plant pot to balance out the size and shape of these larger plants.

2. Tables and Sideboards: Decorate with medium-sized plants in architectural shapes

Chances are, this is the space that you will see most often, and therefore, it’s the best space to make a statement with your plants. Pointy Snake Plants and Aloe, decorative succulents, shiny ‘ZZ’ Plants and leafy Chinese Evergreens will all add a dramatic flair to your table décor. Keep in mind that taller plants will build less dust compared with wider, leafy plants, if this is something you want to avoid.

To match the bold nature of these plants, use a more decorative or interesting plant pot to really show it off.

3. High shelves: Create visual symmetry with soft, draping plants

Long, draping plants serve as a great vertical contrast to the horizontal lines of a shelf, helping to establish visual symmetry to a space. They also help bring your eye upwards, in turn making your room look taller. Nestled among books and objects, trailing plants can really help bring the feeling of the outside in.

Try using soft and delicate plants for these spaces, such as English ivy, String of Pearls, Boston Ferns and (small) Philodendrons. Chances are your shelf will not be in direct sunlight, so make sure to use hardy plants that survive well in the shade.
